The Entourage Effect
What is the Entourage Effect?
CBD is a powerful cannabinoid capable of reducing inflammation, promoting bone growth, and minimizing anxiety, but CBD alone is not as therapeutically effective as full-spectrum cannabinoid extracts. Even when omitting THC to avoid legal issues and undesirable sensations, other cannabinoids have been shown to work synergistically with each other to promote better cannabinoid receptor activation and a more thorough healing process.
The Therapeutic Value of Various Cannabinoids
Though CBD is one of the most medically promising cannabinoid so far, other secondary cannabinoids contain powerful healing properties as well. For example, cannabigerol, or CBG, has been shown to protect neurons, inhibit cancer cell growth, reduce inflammation, and potentially help treat bladder disorders.
Another exciting cannabinoid, Cannabichromene (CBC) has been shown to improve CBD’s anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties and may even help reduce gastrointestinal hypermotility (diarrhea) which is especially promising considering the only current treatments for diarrhea tend to result in bouts of constipation, instead. Other cannabinoids like CBDa and CBDv have shown promise as anti-inflammatory, anti—cancer, and analgesic agents, as well.
Terpenes and Their Effect on the Body and Mind
Another important component of the cannabis plant, terpenes, help determine flavor and the over-all effects a product will have. Terpenes can be found in many plants and are the sole influencer of a products flavor or scent. They are also a key component in essential oils with a therapeutic value that’s difficult to contest. For example, whereas linalool, a floral-scented terpene, is known to have a calming effect on the body, pinene (such as those found in pine needles) may cause the opposite effect of alertness and memory retention. Likewise, musky myrcene terpenes have a sedative effect and citrus-scented limonene terpenes have been shown to elevate mood.
Synergy and full-spectrum CBD extracts
Full-spectrum cannabis extracts are worth much more than the sum of their parts. Research has shown cannabinoids like CBD to counterbalance powerful THC to reduce unwanted side effects and eliminate a dose-dependent pain ceiling in rats. This suggests that CBD can work synergistically with both cannabinoids and other forms of medication to improve efficiency and reduce dependency.
Full-spectrum CBD extracts have a greater impact on health thanks to the terpenes within and their anticancer, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. Not only that, terpenes can actually improve cannabinoid absorption and act on different areas of the body all while helping block bacterial infections. Known as the Entourage Effect (a term coined in the European Journal of Pharmacology), this theory suggests that full-spectrum cannabinoid extracts are more therapeutically effective than cannabinoid isolates.
CBD’s healing potential is compounded when used in conjunction with other naturally-occurring cannabinoids and terpenes. Though THC remains illegal and tightly regulated due to its psychoactive properties, other non-psychoactive cannabinoids like CBG and CBV are not illegal which makes it easier to find and reap the benefits of those as well, provided the products to be consumed are “full-spectrum” rather than just “isolate”.
