All around the globe, more and more people are using CBD for various reasons. This is especially true in America, where country-wide adoption of CBD regimens has increased substantially since the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill that federally legalizes hemp. But what exactly are people using CBD for?
A new Gallup poll sheds some light on what the most widely reported reasons are for using CBD in America, as well as the frequency of use across the country. According to the poll, which was conducted from June 19 to July 12, 2019, one in seven Americans now report using CBD in some fashion.
While CBD use is up across all age ranges and regions of the country overall, poll results indicate that the highest rates of use were among younger persons (20 percent of respondents, ages 18 to 29) and residents of Western states (21 percent of all those polled). Previous Gallup polls indicate a similar trend when exploring marijuana use amongst younger versus older Americans. Conversely, 50 percent of respondents who were aware of what CBD is reported not using it at all, with 35 percent expressing no familiarity with CBD whatsoever.
As far as reasons for using CBD, 40 percent of poll respondents reported using it for pain, 20 percent for anxiety, and 11 percent for insomnia. The remaining 21 percent stated using CBD for a variety of other conditions, including headaches, stress, muscle spasms, skincare, and recreation.
One interesting thing to note in this poll is the decline of both CBD usage and familiarity in older respondents. Only eight percent of those older than 65 reported using CBD, with 49 percent saying they weren’t familiar with it at all – a stark contrast to the 26 percent of those aged 18 to 29 who reported no knowledge of CBD. While no definitive explanation exists for this, one might speculate it has something to do with a substantial lack of advertising and prescribing of CBD by doctors, as it remains an unregulated commodity with no FDA approval.
Another interesting takeaway is the higher prevalence of CBD use in Western portions of the country compared to Midwest, Eastern, and Southern areas. This is undoubtedly due to less restrictive laws and an overall more liberal viewpoint on cannabis in the West, with many CBD companies conducting business more prevalently and openly in states where marijuana has been legalized such as Colorado, California, Oregon and Washington.
Despite there being no bombshell revelations relating to CBD in this recent Gallup poll, it does indicate an overall increase in both usage and awareness across the country. The fact that 14 percent of Americans use CBD adds merit to the notion that it is an effective treatment for all types of conditions for people across all age ranges.
