It’s no secret that CBD oil is currently booming as an industry. But this sudden flood of newbie manufacturers into the marketplace means more than just more choices for consumers: it means buyer beware. By now you may have seen CBD companies promoting their “pure” CBD oil, but what exactly does that mean for you as a consumer?
Unfortunately for consumers, the FDA does not regulate essential oils, and there are only minimal regulations in place for vitamins and supplements. This makes CBD oil a market where consumers are left to do their own research and due diligence when choosing a CBD oil provider. With regards to essential oils, terms like “therapeutic grade” and “pure” can lead to confusion, as there is no industry standard that defines what these terms actually mean. While CBD oil is not an essential oil (though it does contain some, in the form of hemp extract as a carrier), the CBD industry is finding itself in a similar regulatory situation as essential oils, where industry standards remain unclarified.
As a general rule, “pure” typically means there are no synthetic chemicals added. But because there are no specific regulations in place to clarify this term, consumers cannot be certain that the CBD oil they’re purchasing is pure, simply because it is labeled as such.
One such organization, the U.S. Hemp Authority, is striving to create consistency and quality across the industry, in order to provide better education for consumers in search of pure CBD oil. The U.S. Hemp Authority helps manufacturers to use Good Agricultural Practices and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), as well as reporting, recordkeeping, employee training, and quality control, in order to bring the standards of CBD manufacturing in line with that of other well-established industries. This organization also seeks to standardize terms regarding CBD oil such as “pure” and “full-spectrum CBD oil.”
