At 180 degrees, the terpenes in the oil begin to break down; at 220 degrees, the cannabinoids do the same. We encourage our customers to look at ways to add CBD after baking when things cool down to temperatures that won’t impact the efficacy of using CBD oil.
You may already know and love CBD oil, but did you know you can bake with it? CBD is an abbreviation of Cannabidiol, an extract from the hemp plant.
Baking with CBD Oil: Why Try It?

Start Small and Size Up
One of the biggest mistakes people make when first baking with CBD is adding too much. It’s best to start with a small batch, with a small amount of CBD oil, and then taste and adjust up on the next batch. As a general rule of thumb, substitute 3/4 to 1 teaspoon of CBD oil per serving in place of other oils in the recipe. So if your cake mix calls for 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil for an 8-serving cake, then you would add 6 to 8 teaspoons (approximately 3 to 3 2/3 tablespoons) of CBD oil and the remaining amount (1 to 1 1/3 tablespoon) of regular vegetable oil.
Keep It Low
We recommend keeping the cook temperature at or below 340 degrees Fahrenheit. CBD has a boiling point of 320 to 356 degrees Fahrenheit, which means cooking it at higher temperatures for a long time can reduce your overall benefit by:
- Damaging or destroying the more delicate terpenes in the product
- Causing the CBD oil to evaporate or “cookout”
- Bring more bitterness forward, adversely affecting the flavor
Math It Up
If your goal is to have a specific amount of CBD in each portion, use this simple formula to calculate how much CBD oil to use. Recipe yield x desired amount of CBD per serving = total amount of CBD to use in the recipe. For example, if our earlier example of cake yields 8 services and you’d like each serving to contain 10 mg of CBD, then you’ll want to use a total of 80 mg of CBD.
