Before exploring the question of whether or not it’s beneficial for children to take CBD, let’s take a quick look at what CBD is and where it comes from. The cannabis sativa plant, also known as hemp, is the same strain of plant that produces both CBD and marijuana. Why then does marijuana give the user a high when CBD does not? It’s a tiny difference that makes a huge impact: it all comes down to the amount of THC in the particular strain of plant.
THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol, and this level of THC is what is solely responsible for producing marijuana’s high, which is not present in CBD. When the U.S. Farm Bill passed in December of 2018, it created a distinction between marijuana and industrial hemp, even though they both are derived from the same plant, cannabis sativa. Hemp that contains only trace amounts of THC (specifically, less than 0.3%) is considered to be industrial hemp and is federally legal. Hemp that contains more than this amount is deemed marijuana, which is a Schedule I drug.
You may already be familiar with the benefits of CBD for adults, such as:
Parents often turn to CBD oil as a more natural alternative to prescription drugs with long lists of dangerous side effects. Likewise, CBD is a safer alternative to medical marijuana, since CBD is non-intoxicating and considered generally safe for use.
If you’re looking to administer CBD oil to your child, consider the following:
CBD is considered to be generally safe for use, but very little research has been completed for its use in young children. We encourage you to do your own research and to check with your pediatrician. Be advised that because the legalization is relatively new, some physicians are not yet well-educated about CBD. If your regular pediatrician isn’t in the know, get a second opinion from one who is. You know your child better than anyone else – when it comes to deciding whether or not to give your child CBD oil, get advice from your pediatrician, learn all you can, and then follow your own parental intuition.
