CBD Oil Strength Explained

CBD (cannabidiol) boasts a myriad of health benefits — from pain relief and stress reduction to improved sleep (just to name a few). So it’s not surprising that more and more people are turning to this promising cannabinoid for a natural solution to physical and mental ailments. When it comes to dosing, however, many are left without a clue as to where to start. There’s no standard when it comes to CBD potency, and it varies greatly from one manufacturer to the next (and even within a single manufacturer’s line of products). As if that weren’t confusing enough — doctors will sometimes recommend a 10 mL dose of CBD to patients, but with no clear direction of which potency to use. As you can imagine, 10 mL of a weak CBD oil is very different from 10 mL of a highly potent one.

It shouldn’t be so hard to take advantage of the healing benefits of CBD, which is why we’ve put together this guide to CBD potency. We’ll go over CBD oil strength and explain it in a way you can understand and think with. We’ll also help you determine what potency you should get and how to find your perfect dose to get the maximum benefits available.

CBD Oil Strength Explained

CBD oils contain an active concentrated hemp extract (the source of the CBD) as well as a carrier oil which is used to dilute the CBD and make it easier to dose. (At NuLeaf Naturals, the carrier oil we use is organic hemp seed oil.)

Typically, the amount of CBD in a cannabidiol supplement is expressed in milligrams (mg), and the product volume in milliliters (mL). CBD oil potency is determined by the amount of cannabidiol per milliliter (CBD mg/mL).

Ideally, supplement packaging will explicitly indicate the potency of a CBD product, but if that isn’t the case, you can calculate it yourself. Simply divide the total amount of CBD (in milligrams) by the total volume of the package (in milliliters). The resulting number is the CBD potency. For example, say you have a container of CBD oil that contains 300 mg of CBD in 5 mL of oil. After running the numbers (300 divided by 5), you’ll find the potency is 60 mg of CBD per mL.

In general, here’s how potency levels break down when it comes to CBD products:

CBD Content (mg/mL) Potency Level
Below 5 mg/mL Low strength
Between 15 and 30 mg/mL Medium strength
Between 30 and 60 mg/mL High strength
60+ mg/mL Ultra high strength or Concentrate

As you can see in the chart above, the most potent CBD oils you can find (without being full-blown concentrates) will typically have a cannabidiol content between 30 and 60 mg/mL. And while you can definitely find high potency CBD oil of 100 mg/mL or more, such high concentrations make accurate dosing very difficult. This is why NuLeaf Naturals maintains a consistent potency of 60 mg/mL in all of our CBD products. This is a strength that’s effective, consistent, and enables you to determine your “just right” dose with ease.

What Strength CBD Oil is Right for Me?

When starting a CBD regimen, it’s good to begin with a standard dose of high-quality, potent (but not too potent) CBD oil. If you’re wondering, “So, what potency CBD should I get?” CBD oil with a CBD content of 60 mg/mL is the best choice. This is a good strength because it allows you to easily begin a base dose and then increase slowly as needed, all the while knowing exactly how much CBD you’re taking. If you use CBD oil with too high a potency, it’s difficult to accurately dose, while CBD oils with very low potency don’t last long since you have to consume more oil to get the same amount of CBD.

So you can see how the strength of CBD matters. But did you know the type of CBD will also contribute to its efficacy? Studies have confirmed that when a variety of cannabinoids are ingested together, the benefits experienced are greater than when taken on their own. This is called “the entourage effect,” and it makes multi-cannabinoid products more potent by default.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a few different types of CBD oil:

  • Full spectrum CBD oil is a CBD preparation that contains the majority of cannabis plant compounds, including a variety of other cannabinoids (and 0.3 percent THC or less).
Note: This is a great option if you want to experience the so-called “entourage effect,” the synergy that comes with all the compounds working together, resulting in greater therapeutic benefits.
  • Whole plant CBD oil is less refined than full spectrum CBD oil. It contains (you guessed it) the whole cannabis plant, including fats, waxes, and other fibrous plant material.
Note: It can be bitter and taste less pleasant compared to full spectrum CBD.
  • Broad spectrum CBD oil is very similar to its full spectrum cousin, with the primary difference being its THC content (or lack thereof).
Note: It still includes a range of cannabinoids — just no THC.
  • CBD isolate is CBD that has been refined to a powder. It contains no other cannabinoids or impurities. It is pure CBD and is sometimes mixed with a carrier oil to create a CBD isolate oil.
Note: CBD isolate doesn’t allow for the entourage effect to come into play.
NuLeaf Naturals’ suggested dose: Take 30 mg (10 drops) of our Full Spectrum CBD Oil daily or as needed.
