CBD at a Glance

Cannabidiol is a type of cannabinoid, a fat-based molecule found in cannabis plants that can interact with our bodies’ endocannabinoid systems (ECS), which governs a host of functions within the body including mood, memory, sleep, and metabolism.

CBD and THC are two of the most well-known cannabinoids. However there are over 100 different kinds of cannabinoids that we currently know about. Research has shown cannabinoids to demonstrate a number of therapeutic benefits. CBD, for instance, is touted for its anti-inflammatory effects. Other notable benefits associated with CBD include anti-epileptic properties and anti-anxiety effects. Data regarding the use of CBD for depression and anxiety is “limited but promising,” and some studies show CBD to be useful in resolving sleep disorders with little to no side effects.

Like humans, most animals also have an endocannabinoid system. As such they can also benefit from the administration of cannabinoids such as CBD.

How to Give CBD to Dogs

The first step to consider when administering CBD for dogs is dosing. How much your furry friend needs is ultimately contingent on two factors: the quality or potency of the pet CBD oil and the dog’s weight. When using our full-spectrum CBD oil, we recommend starting with a dose of 6mg of CBD (2 drops) per 25 pounds per day and slowly increasing dosage with time if necessary.

You can administer CBD oil to dogs by applying it directly to their gums, folds of their cheek or the thin, venous skin of their ears. Another option is to add CBD oil to peanut butter which can help stimulate their gums.

CBD typically takes 30 to 60 minutes to kick in for dogs. The risks and safety profile of administering CBD to dogs on a daily basis have still not been fully evaluated yet. However many anecdotal reports suggest that CBD benefits include reduction in indications of anxiety and aging, typically seen as improved mobility and comfort.

Christine S. uses our pet CBD oil to help her two dogs and considers it to be a “blessing.” One suffers from arthritis and the other has anxiety issues. “CBD has worked wonders for both and I’ve used it for many years on them,” she says.

How to Give CBD to Cats

Just as with any pet or human, full-spectrum CBD oil is an ideal blend to administer to cats. “Full spectrum” means the product contains high levels of CBD, other beneficial cannabinoids like CBC, CBG, and CBN, and terpenes. Studies confirm that when a variety of cannabinoids are ingested together, the effect they produce is greater than when taken on their own. This is known as the entourage effect.

Each drop of our full spectrum pet oil contains 3mg of CBD, which can be added to your cat’s favorite food or treat, or administered directly. The recommended starting dose is 3mg (1 drop) per 12 ½ pounds per day. Slowly increase the dosage as needed.

Consumers who give our CBD oil to cats report a number of benefits including improved mobility and energy levels.

“My 13 year old cat could barely walk due to arthritis,” says Shawna G. “She now runs, plays, and jumps with excitement when I bring out her toys. She is like a kitten again!”

How to Give CBD to Horses

An increasing number of people are turning to CBD to help their horses with a variety of ailments from arthritis and mobility issues to anxiety.

The recommended daily dose for horses is 6 mg of CBD per 25 lbs of body weight. The CBD oil can be administered directly into gums or added to horse treats.

In an Equine Wellness Magazine case study, Liz G., a veterinarian based in Arkansas, administered CBD twice before horseback riding to see how it would affect her horse’s demeanor. “She’s more relaxed and not as reactive,” Liz reported. “She doesn’t get so nervous about everything.”

Six weeks of consistent CBD use before training led Liz to ultimately conclude, “The CBD has made a world of difference in her training. We have made huge improvements since I started using it.”
